PTT from Nextel is unlimited (free) with certain plans and have gone coast to coast (US) plus south of the border (Mexico). With GSM providers launching PTT, there's a chance that PTT may go worldwide (oh the annoyance of hearing someone's conversation out loud)....

I think it would be like bluejacking so they wont support it because in walkie-talkies you can listen to other's conversations and operators wont aloow them free

Could someone post a short description of how push to talk works... You push a button and then you talk - but how do you select the recipient (is it by phone number, is it from a list of close units, do units have to be paired etc.).

@lamebot - yes, they have to be "paired." the other person can 1-call you using your PRVT ID #, 2-you can then save theirs in your phone book just like a regular # and retrieve to talk again at any time, 3-if they call you and you immediately start to PTT back and forth, it will work but you still need to store the # or it will disappear (missed call)after about 30 sec. like anyone else who calls you. The overall point- you have 2 numbers for each person- one a PRVT ID # and two- a cell number to talk to them by...each plan varies in cost- PTT is extremely cheap. My wife's plan is like $40/mo. for 500 cell minutes and 1000 PTT- she's never even come close to using all the PTT- more like only 200.

Well, u'll never see those bulk minutes and those low prices.500 mins on my network costs around 80$.We have no PTT but keeping the proportions would b an extra 40$.
We have better service in Europe but MORE expensive, damn

Correct me if I'm wrong but the current CDMA versions of PTT and future version of GSM PTT will not require a private id. They will be able to PTT using their cell phone number.
