Did the place names come up because you ticked the 'Area Info' box as well?

Unfortunately this 'cell info' only works on Vodafone, I've tried it on all other networks with no joy! Shame, as it can be quite interesting or useful to know roughly where you are or what dialling code you're in. Be warned though, having the Cell Info on does drain your battery faster!

Cell id in new zealand is virtually a gps navigation system, its so detailed. For example, if youre in christchurch airport, the cell id is "chc airprt" and in town its chc east, west centre etc.... I remember finding my way around one night by following the cell info on my t68!

AFAIK voda used to (might still) offer a deal where calls to your current area where cheaper, so if you're in the 020 code area you could call numbers in that area at a discounted rate, and that's why they display the area code.
Don't know anyone that ever had a tariff like that, and I've never heard of it on other networks.

This is available on O2 in the UK. Although sent slightly differently than Vodafone.
In - Control Panel / Messaging accounts / Area - You need to add a new channel with the Channel number as 200 and make sure that Cell information is ticked.
It should now display the local area code(s).

@devoiddroid
Thank you very much. It works now.
Does any one know what the Area information tick box is for?
PS: I love Esato I am learning something new every day
