O2 IRL phones also have their own software installed and as Morton said, they are also locked to the network. The main reason why mobiles are being sold with preinstalled network software is because when a handset is tested by a network before approval, the software is tweaked to increase compatability. Thats why if you buy a sim free unit and lets say you place an o2 uk sim inside you will prob encounter minor issues with GPRS and MMS.

cos operators want more control over the software. they want people to spend more money. if they had there way with software, the mms logo would take up most of the screen!!! This message was posted from a P900

Pay As You Go (Pre-Pay) phones are generally always locked unless in some cases where they run out and decide to sell contract unlocked phones as Pay As You Go (rarely happens).

Contract phones on Orange, T-Mobile and most other virtual operators (such as Virgin) tend to be locked, but you can get it unlocked (they may charge for the unlock codes) if you have had the phone for a few months.

Vodafone and O2 do not tend to lock their contract phones UNLESS they are branded under the Vodafone Live! or O2 Active service, However, again they will provide a unlock code (which may cost £20 or so) if you have had the phone for a few months.

Note that because of the customisation of the menus and connect parameters etc., certain features may be tied to the Vodafone Live! or O2 Active funtions (such as the menus, programmed keys etc.).

All 02 phones i have ever purchased have been open to all networks, which is why i prefer to buy 02 rather than other networks.

With Orange they usually lock there phones to Only Orange, which is a bit of a problem.

A few phones for sale if anyone is interested:

Both phones purchased from o2 on all networks.
Both boxed with seal still on the screen.
Buyer can either collect from home or meet nr Manchester.

Nokia 6600 = £230
Samsung E700 = £200

or both for £400
