There are a few threads devoted to this subject, I would suggest that you should search for them, as they contain a great deal of useful information. I believe that the memory stick power drain problem has also been mentioned before, probably in one of the threads I have just mentioned.

If you are meaning a small piece of dark glittery material that is placed in the battery compartment, then yes, I have used such a 'device'.
There is a thread on this subject, you should be able to find it using the search. You will be able to read some pseudo-scientific explanations as to how it works.
