Nokia release a phone regardless ogf bugs but then again their users dont care. so they can get away with it stick a i on the end of the name and release it 3 months later.

There's nothing to stop someone developing an app that displays text in landscape mode, Mobipocket Reader does it no problem.
The bigger problem is that UIQ won't accept text input in landscape mode although again, there's nothing to stop an enterprising programmer with too much time from writing their own virtual keyboard (or users could use an external keyboard like the Pocketop one).
