I would buy a mini iPOD if it played WMA as I don't really fancy ripping my 500+ CDs again

@switchbitch:
The iPod isn't engineered to last 18 months!! If that's true, then mine must be faulty! Do you think the designers put a little clock in it that tells it to stop working after 18 months?!
The only components that have a more limited lifespan are the batteries, which as already mentioned applies to all rechargable batteries, not just the iPods.
Apple (and third parties) offer battery replacement schemes for around £50 or $99 as these aren't easily replaceable parts like a mobile phone battery. In fact this compares quite well with
Sony Ericssons quoted price of £39.99 for a replacement T610 battery - and that doesn't include shipping and fitting!
If the battery fails during the warranty period, it'll be fixed for free as you'd expect. After the warranty period, you have to pay - same as any other electronic device that fails after its warranty has expired.
But if you want you can take out an extended warranty...
@masseur:
No doubt you'll have to re-rip your CDs at some point in the future when Microsofts forced obselecence makes your current WMA files incompatible with some future version of Windows or Media Player!
I guess the only answer is to rip them all once in an uncompressed format, and automatically batch process the whole lot anytime you want a format/hardware change!

I think the problem with the original iPOD was not so much the battery itself, because as you say we expect them to fail, though 18 month does sound like a short life even so
I think the problem was that originally apple were telling owners the battery was a non replaceable part (and indeed to throw away the unit and buy a new one!) and it was only after a hell of a lot of fuss and threats of class action that they, and 3rd parties, found a way to replace the battery
that was my understanding anyway

Most electronic goods in my experience seem to be engineered to have a lifetime as long as the guarantee. My 1 year guaranteed gadgets last a year then just stop working. Hasnt anyone else noticed this? Nothing is built to last these days, if stuff lasted forever we would never buy anything new.
