The camera will still be 0.3 MPixel. They achieve 1.2 MPixel using a technique named interpolation. Imagine this symbol '0' is a pixel.

Original image:
000...
000...
000...
...........

Interpolated image:
0x0x0...
xxxxx...
0x0x0...
xxxxx...
0x0x0...
.......

x pixel value is then calculated using info from the nearest pixels.
There are algorithms for this...

Nice explanation Krubach

This will result in big pics but not fantastic quality however a welcome addition non the less.

Always a pleasure...

Just to add some explanation about Digital Zoom

Imagine the image:
[1A][1B][1C]...
[2A][2B][2C]...
[3A][3B][3C]...
.................

To achieve a 2x digital zoom pixels are grouped in 4, merged and a new pixel is calculated using the info from those 4 pixels, like:

[1A], [1B], [2A] and [2B] are grouped to form a new [1A] pixel.
Resulting in a "blurred" image zoomed, and as expected with lower quality or at least not a "real" image.

lets hope they do a better job than they did with the T630. Its VGA resolution is interpolated from the CIF image and its fairly crap as you can see

sample picture taken in CIF (288x352, 28kb)

and the same picture taken in "Extended" VGA (480x640, 62kb)

I doubt it.
They'll be using the same algorithms, for sure...

I still dont see why people think bigger is better..

It's a phone camera, so no matter what resolution you can get it upto people are still gonna moan that its a load of crap.

We'll just have to wait and see...
@mass Why did you move the memory sticks?
Here's the link to that 3650 prog I was talking about.

By the way, mixin. Bigger when smaller is better

The P900 has moved over a little too, covering part of the O of VAIO!
