If you can use a Windows PC, you'll have no problems switching to a Mac, they're designed to be easy to use. Have a look here for answers to many questions about switching.

Unfortunately you can't get a 12" iBook with DVD-RW, only a 14" because of its physical size. I would recommend the fastest iBook you can afford with 512mb RAM.

They only do G4 iBooks now. G4's are better than G3 anyway!

As mentioned previously you can get a 1Ghz G4 14" iBook with DVD-RW for £1019 (just £19 more than your budget!). It's definately worth it if you need to burn DVDs. And you could add more RAM at a later date yourself. It's very easy - it just slots in under the keyboard.

If you really don't want a 14" iBook, then the 1Ghz G4 12" iBook is your only option at £799, but you can't get these with DVD-RW. Have a look on the UK AppleStore for the build-to-order options available. You can double the RAM to 512mb and double the hard disk size to 60gb for an extra £130 bringing the total to £928, well within your budget.

You can't burn DVDs in a CD-RW drive. However you can burn proper DVD Video data to a CD-R and some (but not all) DVD players will play it back just like a regular DVD. But you'll be severely limited by capacity. A DVD holds 4.3gb of data whereas a CD only holds 700mb.

You don't mention what kind of data you want to put onto DVD, but if you want to 'backup' movies, there is free software that will compress a DVD movie onto 1 or 2 CDs in MPEG4 format to play back in QuickTime. It's not DVD quality, but quite watchable.

For burning CDs and DVDs in every format I'd recommend Roxio Toast.

Any other questions, just ask!
