Damn. That's just insane. When I had my firmware updated it took the guys at my SE service center about half an hour... and that was only because they had to do two other phones before mine. Didn't have to pay anything either, although they said they do charge people who don't have any valid reason for an update except "I want the latest firmware". From what they told me, it seems service centers get money from SE for the updates they do, as long as they can prove there was a good reason for the update.

I'm from UK, London and I am aware of 2 sony ericsson authorised service centres here.
One is based in North London, and they charge £15+VAT for firmware upgrade. So that comes to £17.63
The other one is based in Forest Road, North east London and they charge £30 for firmware upgrade.
The latter one is a rip-off. The first one provides a good, friendly service and aim to provide firmware upgrade within 1 hour.
I think its quicker and cheaper to have it done from sony ericsson service centre. CPW can take days or even weeks just to upgrade the software.

have just taken my t610 and t630 for a service/upgrade at my local

service centre (MPRC). they said that they wont just do an upgrade. there has to be a problem with the phone. i told them the t630 was switching itself off and was slow to access anything. i also said that the t610 had problems recognising the sim cards (both handsets are sim free & unbranded) they were both returned within 20mins with software upgrades and sim readers reprogramed/updated and didnt cost me anything. the t610 is 3 months past it warranty expiry as well.

surley FW updates should be free as it is SE's fault for not getting it right the first time around. Why should we have to pay to fix a problem that they have made. Microsoft don't charge you everytime they releases an securtiy update or messenger update, so why should SE charge to update.
Could i use the excuse java games are unplayable (which is true) to get the update for free? Or does there need to be a problem which affects the use of the phone?
