it is customised to o2, but the update service says its up to date? whats the latest firmware?

The o2 firmware seems to be R3A, and the latest 'unbranded' is R5B (I think)... Don't know what we're missing, but I always like to be current

wont just telling the phone its a different (unbranded CDA) number make it update to the new firmware?

Unfortunately not... There used to be a way round this - but SE now also check the IMEI of the telephone rather than the CDA number when doing an update. Changing the IMEI is illegal in the UK.
