This is not what I expected from the Z1010, I was under the impression that the two phones had about the same java engine(apart from the K700 3d support) and that they would use the same processor speed for the java engine.

But also comparing jbenchmark 2 figures shows some differences when broken down...

K700i:
Total score : 128
Image manipulation : 157
Text : 276
Sprites, game scene : 187
3D transformation : 206
User interface : 20

Z1010:
Total score : 120
Image manipulation : 121
Text : 572
Sprites, game scene : 179
3D transformation : 102
User interface : 19

I wonder if this will improve in subsequent Z1010 firmwares so it will close in on K700i?

one build, two phones: k700 does about 20fps, z1010 about 7. i think the java midp2 library built into the z1010 is really slow compared to the k700. Another way of looking at it is that sony took a lot of time and care with the k700 to make sure it ran really quicky by optimising the midp2 libraries and they knew developers would rely on the libraries to create cool games and apps, and for the z1010 they didn't bother to do shit.

i think the midp1 version of the game would run fine if the phone let it but no-one can get it to work on the real device even though it works fine on my emulator and on other handsets. the sony game might not be proven but the general code and old engine is and i don't know whats wrong with it.

i use jbenchmark to find out the phones that may suit the game. the z1010 looks promising but real results don't always tie up with jbenchmark. For example, we have a nokia 7600 that flies along at 38 frames per second - its amazing. That uses the nokia api for speed, something jbenchmark can't test.

jbenchmark also doesn't do full screen, we do. i could try a non-fullscreen version to see if that works.

it worked on your phone? excellent! thanks for running the test. 18fps isn't bad. i wonder why it won't run on other z1010s though, how odd. i can post a playable one-level demo if you want. i won't if you don't like the game though or maybe , either works

I would like to try a plyable demo on my Z1010. I'm on a longer vacation trip in a non-3g country right now though, so I wouldn't be able to try it for a few weeks. But please post it, I will try it Hopfully there will be a new firmware for the Z1010 soon to fix some of the most evident phone problems, and hopfully the java engine will get a brush up...

I have updated the demo and speed test builds of Mayhem for the Z1010. Hopefully it will work much better than the previous version. If you want to try the speed test out and/or the demo (they are both free) please download them as zip files from http://www.infinitelives.tv/MMD/dist/ - there is no pressure to buy or anything, i'm just after the speed test results.

shrug, i don't get it. its the same build as the k700 and we have no problems reported on that phone. its the same code as that which works on a p900. the game works fine on an siemens sx1, cx65, and various nokias - it is has been released for about three months on nokias with no reported problems.

where did it go wrong? the initial loading screen? below the picture is a percentage complete (which goes up from zero to 100%) and then below that the "free memory" number that should go down. At the *very* bottom of the screen should be a number with "K" next to it - total memory installed. what is the bottom number? is it "512K"? if it is something like "256K" then the game isn't going to fit it.

During loading, the percentage complete goes up and the "free memory" number just below it goes down. Does the free memory number drop below 60,000? does it go all the way down to 2000 or something? if it does, the phone is losing memory fast.

i don't have access to a real z1010 myself but the code works fine on the emulator even with stupidly reduced memory. i can get the game to lock up on loading if i set the memory to a tiny level (250k) but the z1010 shouldn't be that low, its supposed to have lots of memory and at least enough to run mayhem with some to spare.

i've done everything i can to get the game to work on a z1010 without having a handset and i can't afford to buy one. i'm satisfied that there is nothing wrong with the code as i've given it a thorough review and it works on other devices without problems.

thanks for trying it out though. i'm sorry it took so much of your time. i'm disappointed but i appreciate you spending time to look at this for me.
