@ orangeman
I agree with you if the phones are highly subsidised, but in some cases here, the carriers dont subsidize the phones that much (http://www.fido.ca/portal/product/product.jsp?lang=en, agreement means 2 year contract, no agreement, no contract).
So in the case of my carrier, I don't see why the phone should be locked...heck, no phones should be locked!

none of mine are locked. everyone has a choice, contract or not. my advice is... just shop around, ask, will the handset be locked? if yes walk away and try the next shop....

As I tend to buy a lot of second hand phones of Ebay, it's damned annoying!

I'm all for unlocked phones.
With regards to the phone companies and making money out of contracts - when you take out a new contract, you're tied to it for at least a year. The company makes their money out of the line rental in that year, so really it shouldn't matter to them if you take the contract sim out of your brand new, subsidised K700 etc, use your current sim in it, and shove that new contract one in an old 3310 and rarely use it, they're getting their money out of the line rental.
And as what happened when I took my contract out - you can't change down to a cheaper tariff for a certain number of months so they get the cost of the handset out of you still!
As they are getting their money for the handset, I agree that all mobiles should be unlocked, like they are in Greece.

And for subscribing for a contract with free airtime we get a discount on unlocked mobile price. Discount can reach up to 200 euro with 600 minutes free talk time and on some operators with 200 texts with a 80 euro monthly fee.
