I enquired about this with sony ericsson. here is all i got told

With regards to your enquiry,
1. Scroll to [SETTINGS], press "Select"
2. Scroll to [SOUNDS AND ALERTS], press "Select"
3. Scroll to [MESSAGE ALERT], press "Select"
4. scroll to a message alert, press "Select"
You can use only perdefined alerts, and rather there will be no option to set custom message alerts.
