With common sense and MS out of the loop, we would probably not need any anti-virus SW at all. If Symbian OS is half as secure as Linux, viruses will probably never be a big threat. Think following link will give a good perspective on this topic.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2003/10/06/linux_vs_windows_viruses

I would never pay for anti-virus SW unless I know there is a threat and that the anti-virus SW can protect me against it (not all anti-virus SW is equally good you know). Its not uncommon people gets a lot of trouble after installing such SW and I don't think its worth the risk.

I have a Mac.. I'll be buggered if I'm going to install a virus scanner for that to scanner incoming email and documents..

Viruses are mostly a microsoft problem... if you have a windows machine, then YOU should be responsible for checking your own incoming / outgoing email and other documents - NOT NON MICROSOFT USERS!!

The same goes for UIQ.. I'm not wasting processor time in checking for viruses for the convinence of windows users.

If you choose to have an insecure operating system and other software, then you shouldn't expect others to protect you from viruses. You chose to use windows, now you must take the responsibility for protecting yourself.

Apologies for not replying sooner, I was woo'd from the lappy last night, I reckon number of posts is directly proportional to lost 'opportunities'
Please don't get me wrong, I agree with @scotsboy re price and 100%it's mostly a MS Windows problem. I guess it's my complicated background that see's computer viruses and the 'real world' viruses as the same. ie the airborne Common Cold or the contact HIV they only exist because of carriers and if the carriers knew they were infected and did not pass it on then it would die.

Maybe I should open my eyes more and see the 'real world' and people really just see it as 'not my problem mate'

The only virus/trojan so far is cabir, which transmits via bluetooth - so you would have to accept it as an incoming contact to install it (as it's a .sis file?) and then reconfirm the install.
PC virus checkers are incorporating the trojan scanners for cabir anyway just in case so what really is the use of a phone virus scanner?

I would have thought the best attack would be to fake up an SE website and email people that a vital update is out and direct them to the fake site. Even then the PC antivirus should recognise the .sis file to be a trojan.

Erm.. since you can't run any of these microsoft viri, they aren't spreading through your machine anyway, so in a way your use of a Mac is doing us Windows users a favour anyway. Smugly eschewing a virus checker, on the other hand, just leaves you wide open to that occasional virus written just for you..

just because you have a Mac doesn't make you immune to viruses.
Perhaps you are the worlds most prolific Mac open relay without even knowing it?

@Boinng
Erm, actually, I can spread viruses / worms to windows machines...

I email infected documents / executables to a windows user.. they open the attachment and the viruses infects their machine.. (assuming they don't have an up to date virus checker)

@cootuk
There are NO viruses in the wild for the Mac... if there was, we'd quickly know about it, just like the 'worm' for Symbian UIQ devices.

As I said previously, its not my responsbility to protect windows users against their insecure OS... so, no virus checker on my Mac ( I do have one, I don't use it - .Mac subscription offer)

There are viruses/trojans for the Mac... just that the Mac security features/basic design makes it hard for them to get installed so not as many are written as for Windows.

I'm not trying to bash Macs here, I wish Windows was half as good as Macs for security, but I'm saying you can't be complacent. If a virulent Mac virus was released then with so many unprotected Mac users it could be worse than any Windows attack simply because so many Mac users cannot believe it will happen to them too.

hehe. I remember about 10 years ago.. when all a very few number of customers wantred and bought an antivirus software...
Ok. It could be good to have. But rarely someone got infected...

Same here it feels like. Well atleast an antiviruscompany is ahead.
Would be cool to see their virus-defenition-file... cant be long atm...
