Personally, I would always buy a Symbian smartphone... I don't like Palm much, and well, micrsoft - they make apalling software - so I don't even consider them.
I like the SE P900.. but there is a lack of software - especially games. I would consider a Nokia.. but they don't make touch screen phones.
If Nokia made a reasonable sized smartphone with touch screen, I'd probably go with that over a SE Pxxx.

Dont listen to the suggestions from people in here Hacker, coz theyre all biased. The p900/910 is a FAT phone that tries too hard, even though it has touchscreen its not half as fun as being able to type on a keyboard like on the 9500. Then theres wi-fi baby! There are more & more hotspots springing up everyday all over the globe.. Find a SE with wifi if u can, the SE psychos can still dream of having that for a long time to come! Hehehe! I dont have anything against SE phones because i own a k700i, had a p900 and gave it to a friend, just bought a Nokia 6670 and i am waiting for the 9500 to come out.

I think the main thing is as Jah said, think about what you need in the phone.
If you don't want the Microsoft OS then that rules out the XD's and Motorola MPx series, but I think are still worth considering as they are very capable devices.
Of the P910 and 9500 then I personally went for the P910, my reasons being size and the touch screen. Having used a couple of different smartphones, the difference to me was like using a PC without a mouse on the keyboard based Motorola MP200 while the P910 seemed a lot quicker, easier and smoother to use.
