@freeman81 i dont think they are on about a java program. In data services on an SE phone you can change the sms type from GSM to GPRS. And the apps dont seem to work for me anyway This message was posted from a T610

Well, simply, a normal SMS gets 3 seconds to be sent... Whereas an SMS over GPRS takes less then a second!! This method also saves network bandwidth.

BTW: Which operators give you GPRS access and SMS over GPRS on pay-as-you-go style lines? Thank you...

You are sending 160 characters (incase of a single sms) whatever the channel you send it is the same amount of data . So you can not save network bandwidth unless there is something compressed sms! Speed you feel is because normal sms uses the data communication channel between the handset and the cell. Which is lot narrower than GPRS. SMS is not a good solution if you need it to be transmitted faster than 3 seconds in any way.

@to all
Some networks enable sms over GPRS to ease the data channel network which gets overloaded in metropolitan areas or crowded locations. But not heard of any network disabled the conventional SMS.

There are numerous applications out there to enable you send sms via internet. You purchase credit from the company then use a windows application and internet connected PC to send SMS, web interface of the company to send SMS, or a java application and internet connection (GPRS or Dial-up) on the mobile hand set. This way you send the SMS to the gateway through internet. On the mobile may be via GPRS but this is not SMS over GPRS.

@nippit:
Have you ever sent SMS messages to multiple recipients? Even in normal usage, I do not like waiting 3 seconds for a simple SMS to be sent... SMS over GPRS increases speed and decreases bandwidth usage. And yes, no operator can disable normal SMS since not all phones support SMS over GPRS!!!

Anyone knows which UK operators support SMS over GPRS?

Ok maybe I'm being a little picky... but 3seconds? You can't wait for just 3 seconds?

Soon your be saying sending an email or mms from your phone via gprs is too slow.

I can understand your point, if it was taking half a minute or something but 3 seconds...

And why do you care about bandwidth usage? If the network is getting choked then its the SP that has to worry not its subscribers...

Sorry rant over, it was the 3 seconds that got me.

Well, 3 seconds is too much once you get used to less then half a second! (and mostly when you start sending grouped messages) Also, my operator bills me half the normal SMS price when I use GPRS for sending SMS!! (quite logically, indeed)

Also, bandwidth usage becomes important in situations with high network usage: like bombings, new year, ...

And still you did not tell me which operators in the UK supports SMS over GPRS
