cheers cytech!is there any setting on any phone you know of that could give you info on a persons whereabouts from there text when they reply to you?probably far fetched but it would be cool!!

you mean tracing someone by the sms he sends to you? no, you can't do it from your mobile phone... if you wanna trace him you need to get into the MSC (mobile services switching center, the highest level in the GSM network)... or if your network provider has some sort of mobile positioning service you can use.

Well remember that the band width that we use for SMS, was initially designed into the Digital service to allow the SP's to pass information to the individual mobile phones, for upgrading sims and features. Very few SP's actually utitlise the features, apart from Orange in the UK, who use it fully, for example allowing them to lock a handset remotely if its stolen. Vodafone transmit a cell data signal from all their cell sites, that can be displayed on the handset if so desired.
