I just thought of something.

If a 2MP cam-phone was used to send images over MMS, the transfer would be stupidly expensive and take ages. Mobile Phones are meant to be just that, Portable Telephones. Not Serious picture taking devices.

Soon we'll be seeing:

NEW CAMERA PHONE OUT

Now takes 12MP photos but can't make phone calls.

Camera phones will never be better than a digicam, so i'm not going to waste my time with overpriced phones that happen to take photos.

I wasn't suggesting sharing high quality pics using mms, or even email from the phone. clearly the technology is not designed for that (nor the pricing). when we all have 3g or better data bandwith available at reasonable price then that will be feasable and practical.

in the meantime there is no reason why a phone cannot substitute as a digital camera such that those high res pics can be used in the same way as they are with a standard digital camera

Well, i agree we need at least 2MP cam in phones. I hate carying both phone and cam with me, a S700 will do for the time being

the idea of 1MP cams is just stupid when most companies use the standard 1.3MP cams. i like cams in phones but now they are just for fun mostly. when the pass the 3MP line and when they are cheap enough. then more people will buy the phones for its cam. i know a digital cam is nice, but i don't have the money for it, i would prefere spending it on a phone cause you use your phone much more then your digital camera.

An upcoming 3.2mp cam phone from samsung has optical zoom,i dont understand the point by saying that digital cam is better,there was a news on esato that phones will get 6mp cams or something like that,i think such a thing can be on par with a pro digital cam. This message was posted from a T610

@Bart: I agree, I love phones, but i also like taking photos, however I can't justify spending £100+ on a camera alone, as I would hardly ever use it, but I take a few fun pics with my 7610, or if i see something interesting, i can take a so-so photo.

PLUS with some company (forgotten who) has developed a new even brighter LED for use in mobile phone camera flash, which helps, i guess

I like to have a cam in a phone that makes decent pictures to share right away MMS/e-mail. Maybe some dud could come up with a compression technology to make the file size small for send it off from the phone to make it feasable. My old 1.3MP camera Sony Mavica makes decent pictures, so I think a 1.3MP-2MP camera phone should do the trick. Although a dedicated camera makes higher quality pics than a camera phone with the same resolution I heart.

My post probably mislead some people... I have a camera phone and I enjoy using it for fun pics, and things that you need a quick photo for, but I will never substitute my Digital Camera for a Camera Phone. They will never be as good quality and from experience, multi task things often do alot, but don't do anything well.

I just want something that makes and recieves calls, and looks good. Having it take photos is an added bonus.

@cheezy, surley spending £300 + on a 3mp camera phone would be better than spending £150 on a 3mp digi cam though, as quality would be similer and you would be getting a lot more for your money.

Also i can't understand the argument over the picture size with mms. Surley you would just make the pics smaller in the same way you do now. I don't send VGA (640x480) pics via mms, i use the smaller option of 176 pixels. You will be able to do the same thing with 40MP ( ) camera phones, as the developers will put the feature in for mms. Then you will use the full power for taking serious photos to put on your pc, email to people or put on websites etc.
