I have called t-mobile and emailed them, - and I get cryptic responses, i.e. don't worry about the prepay setup, bring in the phone. I bought an unlocked phone, and want to purchase a prepay sim. Everything I read states you can bring up the phone with just a sim.
But how is the t-mobile system "aware" that you are prepay? Are the prepay and contract sims different.
Appreciate any info.

They know that the sim is prepay or contract by looking at the number.
Someone correct me if im wrong...the prepay numbers and contract numbers either start with different numbers which are saved in the t-mobile database or they just check the number in the database.

i got an unlocked phone, and I have tmobile 4.99 unlimited wap and I can check my pop3 accounts connect to web any sites and everything
Tmobile staff they do not know nothing about phones or their capabilities,
since the phones they are selling is limited too when the guy asks me what's ur phone model i am like p910 and he replies,, uh? huh? ah alright.. : P ahah that's funny ain it ?
just pop ur carrd in and start using it no need to reprogram nothing..
go to t-mobile.com login to your account and have the auto-setup scripts sent to your phone for gprs and mail and ure good to go.

@TonyMontana,
i find t-mobile customer support is very bad. the minute you tell them you have a P900, they will say 'oh, we do not support the phone'. even though i was calling them i have no signal in the house.
i then tell them 'just listen to me, the lack of signal has NOTHING to do with my P900 and it is not phone dependent'
honestly, i swear they were trained to blame everything on your phone the minute they realize this is not one of the phones they support.
