If you do this you obviously loose warranty, so in case somethings goes wrong in that year (not even necessarily FW related) can you just load the p900 FW from official SE site and overwrite the p910 FW?

using recovery mode or something similar, yes you probably could.

I doubt this (flashing P900 w/ P910 firmware) would be feasible online. SE has caught on to several potential 'hack' schemes. For one, the carrier modified phone firmware swap. They have since implemented an IMEA check in their software.

@sbjg

The necessary tools are similar to what your local vendor would use to repair/flash your phone. These software ranges from $150 - $600. I used the Tornado a couple years ago to flash T68s and P800s. They simply utilize a cable, pc, software to flash the phone. SE has figured out a way to do it remotely. But this is the old school way of doing things. Thus, these tools are specialized for authorized repair techs. Any firmware uploaded to a unit is reversible, thus the phone is totally recoverable and could be brought back to its virgin state (original firmware).

With that said, I don't think SE would have any incentive to allow users to flash their P900s with this as the firmware was strictly developed for the P910. From a strategically financial standpoint this would certainly not help boost P910 sales. It would take cost and effort to implement a firmware update for the P900. At this point they might have just given up just as they did with the P800 once the P900 really started booming in sales. Why keep beating a dead dog when they have a new toy to constantly continue to spend money to improve.

i agree. althought unlike the p900 upgrade over the p800, i doubt the p910 is really boosting in sales. i don't predict it to do nearly as well as the p900 did.

i think SE's time and resources could have been better spent and more worthwhile by wokring on perfecting a p1000. the p910 seems kind of rushed to me. if not in time then in features.

Sorry, I did not understand. Are you trying to say that the SE Webupdate is the same as what the "special" tools like "Fighter" do? ... I mean if suppose SE does allow P900 users to update to the P910 stuff, can this be done through thje SE Webupdate?. Yes or No?

@sbjg

The answer in short is NO. The principle between what SE uses over the internet versus what your local tech uses is the same. Both processes incorporate the same fundamentals, however the methodology is slightly different. Look at it as real sex vs cyber sex. They both achieve the same 'end result', but the methods are different. SE could potentially allow one to flash a P900 with a P910 firmware, however, it is very unlikely for several obvious reasons.

@punkserb

I really don't think the P910 sales will really fall short. Again, the same was said about the P900 upon it's early release. Unlike the P900 the P910 is actually extended beyond its natural comfort zone (European Market). With the P910(a,i,etc..) it shows SE is taking an agressive approach to target a broader market area. Hence, that naturally translates to bigger sales as the target audience increase. With the Blackberry capabilities it also allows itself to compete in the corporate market moreso then the past. My guess is that P910 sales will actually be bigger then that of the P900. After several murmurs about the Nokia 9500 and Moto Mpx I truely doubt SE has much to worry about. You should read the thread I posted about the price tag of the Moto Mpx. I think the Moto A630 will sell better then the MPx in my opinion. And the popularity of the Pxxx is certainly beyond that of any competing pda/mobile phone in the Western market.

here you go...

Thanks to Fighter, I just converted my P900 to a P910a. I will be testing everything out tonight, and posting a full review in this same thread later tonight or tomorrow.

Just wanted to give you all a heads up... As I said MONTHS ago, the 128MB MS Duo size limitation is SOFTWARE-based. I am now happily using a 256MB MS Pro Duo card in my P900.

Here are some more nice features that come with the conversion:

-Bluetooth handsfree profile
-HTML email

I will list all of the features added when I do the full review.

Be aware that I am most likely running a beta P910a firmware on the phone. Time will tell if I can upgrade to later revisions using the Online Update service. In addition, I will be testing various bandlocks on the phone to see if the P900's radio is capable of using 850MHz.

It is also my understanding that the latest P910 firmwares enable RSA protection, but that is no longer an issue for experienced "servicemen".

And yes, I will be offering this upgrade service to anyone interested.

And now, ladies and gentlemen, the proof:

And a VIDEO located here ...

ENJOY!

This is certainly very good news. I would hope the firmware upgrade can eventually be done by the average user. I think Sony has some answering to do about the 128mb MS Duo limitation on the P900.
