the take back policy often doesn't apply to upgrades because you already know what the contract terms and conditions are and the upgrade is only a change of phone and nothing else in the contract is affected
in any case I'll be selling this one and making a a bit of profit to help cover the unbranded P910 that I have

All current CPW stock is unbranded, generic

stock. Whether you purchase sim-free or on contract, you get the same phone.

yes, thats correct about cpw and I nearly got one from them last weekend but they were quoting me around 250 pounds for my upgrade whereas vodafone gave it for 82 pounds including free unlocking
vodafone branding on P910 is very minimal anyway as I have mentioned a couple of times and nothing visible on housing. just the predefined settings specific to vodafone but you can add your own data and wap accounts

I think the value depends on who your service provider is. Masseur, presumably, is billed by Vodafone Connect, therefore Vodafone get all his revenue. If you are billed by CPW, on behalf of Vodafone, or O2 for that matter, your call spend can be taken into account as well, as there is an ongoing revenue stream to Carphone.
So, in conclusion, if you're billed by Carphone, you're better off upgrading there (in fact you have to!) and if you're billed by the network directly (or a subsidiary service provider), you'll get a better deal going direct.
Me, I have a trial version from

and, although I'd normally be first to buy one, I am seriously unhappy that I can't restore a P900 backup to a P910i, and I have to write off to the the various software writers to obtain new registration codes for the 20-odd different apps I have purchased. Although, the upside is that with another 48Mb internal memory, they might run properly this time!

thats pretty much the conclusion I have come to as well regarding where to buy from however I now have a second fully unbranded P910 from the developer site so the vodafone one is out the door soon anyway
interesting that you are unhappy with it but with so much licenced software (well done

) I can understand where you are coming from. My own impression of the P910 is getting better every day but I think the fact that it is so similar to the P900 stops it from having the "new phone" feeling, but then I type and email on the keyboard or view a pdf document or look at how much stuff I have stored on my 512mb duo pro and I realise why I am starting to like this more and more
I just wish vodafone would leave their live branding to the non smartphone range
