I dont bother with the recommended first charge, and i have no battery life problems. Its maybe some sort of disclaimer, as in rare instances it can affect batery life longevity, but mostly on battery technology that is outdated and no longer in use in todays phones.

People don't realise you can can pick up a new battery for under £15 sometimes.
Live a little. Play with it before/while charging!!!!
