The screen disconnects via that connector you see on the motherboard - the little wire latch pulls up, then the ribbon of the screen will simply slide out. It might need a slight wiggle to come free, but it should come out nicely then.
If you see any moisture, wipe it off with something like toilet paper or kitchen roll, and put it somewhere warm and dry, like an airing cupboard for a day or two.

there is as far as i can tell there is a bit of corrosion on the keypad connectors and on the mobo... wonder if i can clean it up a little...
hope... be nice to have a spare phone so i can rid my gf of her very old nokia phone

A 100 times spin trip with your dryer will just do the trick I guess mate! Better bring it to your nearest SE Service Center . . . @sammy_boy's idea of drying it up using a blow dryer will disintegrate the remaining liquid left inside the fone's mechanism pal ! Good luck!

Brilliant!
Next i might suggest either attaching the phone to a rag or towel and spinning it around your head or you could just drop it off a building. Also tossing it at the wall from 10ft away is also an alternative from the building drop.
