Hi,
I waited patiently this year for the P910i and upgraded my P800 after persuading work to fork out (£200 Singlepoint). I admit I may have been too keen and not read the reviews enough cause I although the P910 is a lovely bit of kit, I dont see it as being a huge leap from the P800.. My needs were simple-
VPN into SonicWALL firewall?
Push Email out of the box?
At present I have neither of these without spending money on add ons so am a bit bemused. Other things which annoy slightly -
Lack of Ringtones/Sounds/Images/Games/Videos included (Is there a decent place to download any of these.....FREE)
Hey gary, I can understand your frustration...but also know what the P-series phones are. These are NOT the usual phones you buy that what it comes with is it.
The beauty of the P-series phones is that you can turn it into whatever it is you need using 3rd party apps.
I personally would hate it if I was made to pay for Push Email even though I didn't need it... or VPN apps if I don't use it. To ask for these apps out of the box would be too much... just like asking Microsoft to bundle Adobe Creative Suite with EVERY Windows machine because "I" need it.
VPN and Push Email are not exactly standard throughout the world... and neither are the needs of most P-series users. The great thing about the P-series is the level of personalizing you can do.
My P910 has the apps I want, and hardly any MP3s. My friend has almost no apps on his P800, but it's full of MP3s and movie clips. Wallpapers? I make my own...I hate the stuff that's out there...both free and for sale. Ringtones? Same...I make my own. Whether MIDIs or MP3s...I'd rather have MY own ringtone.
If you go to
www.sonyericsson.com, click on FUN & DOWNLOADS... you'll find some free stuff for your phone (wallpapers and ringtones).
Also, try my-symbian.com for all the available apps for the P-series phones.

jplacson, Good point!
It is all depends on your needs.
I am currently considering the P910i, XDA II and Ipaq H6365. I will have to see what do I want my Smart Phone to do for me.
Any view on this?
Thanks!

Thanx jplacson,
Very valid points you made & I agree with all, but on my research in to the P910i it certainly claimed that it shipped with Push Email. I would have probably purchased it anyway as I love SE phones, but I have to now go back to the boss & ask foir more money for the VPN & Push feature...
Oh well, not my money eh!

Hi gary_b
The p910 should be able to get you your email through your corporate firewall straight out of the box. I know mine does.
Heres how. Speak to your IT guys at work and tell them they should open port 110 on the firewall to poit to the mail server and port 25 should already be open anyway. Then put the settings into your phone and you just pop your mail from your server at work, works like a charm and so far as the vpn goes, you can forget about sonicwall releasing a vpn client for the p910 but if you tell me what you want to do I could advise you further. for example I have a citrix client on my phone and it allows me to get a desktop view of our server on my phone and basically have a windows 2000 machine accessible to me wherever I have a gprs connection now ain't that sweet

Yes you can , it just takes time, like when we all had 133 and 166 Mhz computers... If you want a better browser for http sites then try the Opera browser, you can find it in www.My_symbian.com Btw. Congrats on your P910 , I am waiting for christmas..

Hi Chaps & thanx for responding -
yusufl - I am the IT administrator for all security & servers & port 110 & 25 are already enabled to allow traffic in/out. Can you breifly explain your menaing when saying "just pop your mail from your server at". There is no software on the server to push the mail out, it simply sits there until a request is sent to pull the mail back (to Outlook/PDA etc). With this method I still have to dial up to pull the mail to the P910i -
Regarding the VPN - I have a SonicWALL TZ170 Enhanced that sits in front of the LAN/DMZ. It may be nice to VPN into the LAN to view data on my desktop, but require a client for the phone and as yet movian do not support SW...(Who does!!)
I suppose I could VNC instead...
Rva@ -
>>If you want a better browser for http sites then try the Opera browser,
Did you mean https sites? Can you load them via Opera on the P910?
Cheers lads/lasses
