Unreal Player works fine on my P910i I had to uninstall it from my MS and install it into RAM to register it, it didn't like that I had an older version still on my MS that came from my P800.

This is seriously strange. I have seen a post from masseur (esatonian guru and mod) mentioning something about this just being down to the way the P910i displays the IMEI, and another from someone else, saying that Zi corp told them the problem was something to do with Handango keygens.

I don't think this is anything to worry about. Clearly, handsets can only have one unique IMEI, and this second code only seems to appear in certain software, for the purposes of generating license keys. As long as the Update Service (when one is available) continues to recognise original IMEIs, this should not be an issue. The only other potential problem is warranty repair issues and since *#06# (generic code for displaying handset's true IMEI) continues to display real IMEI, can't see a problem here either.

So, in conclusion, maybe we should be more concerned about why the phone runs so damn slowly!

OH, THE WEIRDNESS!

Before the Update Service was password protected this morning, I ran my Orange P910i through the process (stupid I know, but I didn't think it would let me go all the way through). Anyway, it completed, and I restored the backup I had made minutes earlier.

Opened Tracker, and it had become unregistered! Checked the IMEI it displayed on the registration screen and, lo and behold, it's gone and bloody changed again (by this I mean the IMEI displayed by the software and not the IMEI displayed by *#06# - if this doesn't make sense to you, see the earlier posts in this thread). I have had to email SymbianWare and eZIcorp (eZItap is the only other app I use that uses this "fake" IMEI) for more replacement reg codes.

Could this mean that everytime P910i users use the Update Service (when it is officially up and running) that they will have to re-register half their apps???

Anyone else experience the same thing? I guess it's pretty unlikely since there are very few people who will have performed an Update this morning. The other thing I find strange is that, despite going completely through the Update process, no FW has changed. I guess it was just a dummy service until it is launched properly. I would really appreciate any possible explanations for this from those who understand what I'm on about, cos this 910i is starting to look more trouble than it's worth!

Dave I am surprised that the Update worked at all,

I thought SE didn't support the Butchered P9xx phones for firmware updates and that you had to go to the Supplier when they finally get their official branded firmware?

As did I - the thing is, it didn't work. It went through the motions, no error messages. If I wasn't expecting it to fail, I would have thought that it worked, but no change to the firmware versions display in system info post-Update.

Very odd....not quite as odd as the fact that the bloody thing thinks it's changed it's IMEI though!

What I've done is forwarded them the emails that they've sent me as confirmation of purchase, which have all the details of the previous IMEI and reg on them. If you haven't got those emails, all you can really do is email whatever info you have and hope they:

a) have a record of the transaction, and

b) are honest about it if they do.

Otherwise, unfortunately, I think you'll have to purchase again. By the way, SymbianWare are bloody slow at providing new codes. It seems to be 3-4 days to get a response!

Has anyone considered that the code shown, is generated by the software itself. It might work on a basis similar to certain software for PC's, that looks at the configuration of the PC and generates a code based on that configuration. This would then explain why a reg code would not work after a software upgrade. If this is the case, it is a pretty crap way of protecting an application.

@P800!

I have considered exactly that. However, it is odd that both eZItap (from ZI Corp) and Tracker (from Symbianware) display the same code, and that the non-event that was my software upgrade has generated a new code, which is again the same for both applications.

Either way, no doubt if it is a software-protection method, it is both rubbish and pointless, as IMEIs are unique and therefore perfectly sufficient to generate a unique code to prevent unlicensed use.

I think the software "IMEI" changing is an anomaly, as I have an Orange P910i and should, therefore, not have gone through the upgrade process (if I tried it now that it is up and running, it would not let me proceed, as there is no range-approved update for my CDA version) so it is probably something that will be corrected if I upgrade properly to Orange firmware. The strange and annoying thing is that there are two codes, identifying themselves as IMEIs, in the first place!

This is what I got from Zicorp:
Hi xxxx,

We don't do anything special with the number. Our software ask the
Symbian operating system for the IMEI number which should be locked to the hardware, NOT the software and should remain contant.

To be honest, the number shouldn't change and I have no idea why it has I'm going to have to check with Symbian and Sony Ericsson on this.

We have shown that, if we know the number that is returned by the
Symbian operating system (and displayed by the eZiTap registration
screen), we can issue a registration code. Although inconvenient for all
of us, we can get you up and running.

Best regards,

Bill
