I don't have your screen problem, but my phone did lock upon charging (a SE defect?) after 6 weeks. I live in CA, USA.
SE has one (yes, just a single!) service center for the USA. It is located in NC, and is called Solectron (I guess they outsourced it).
I called USA Sony Ericsson Support (1-866-766-9374), and got a RA# and sent my phone in. Since it was under warranty, all I paid for was shipping (one way to them). They took 5 business days on the phone, and shipped it back to me 2nd day FedEx. Total time without my phone was roughly 12 days.
They upgraded the firmware on my phone. It no longer locks up charging, but its still quirky when I plug/remove the charger sometimes (oh well).
I hope they can help you.

@mathpet: I had exactly this problem last night. In unlock mode, the screen LEDs just stopped functioning. I found switching the phone off and on again solved the issue. Hope this doesn't happen too often!
FYI-My firmware is R2L

I got a almost a same problem when i played I game. I dont know remember what game it was but when I did the service test on the illumination the LED went on again.

Thanks everyone for your reply. My phone is still inconsistant with the LED light and I have given up. I sent my phone back to SE customer service for a fix. Really appreciate all the help you guys gave. I just seriously love that phone and it really sucks this is happening to me.
