3G is dead... 3G died before it ever even took off. Kinda like Iridium and GlobalStar... they're still around... they used to boast that they were the next generation of global communications... but it wasn't a very mature or refined system. Nice idea, but not practical in the end.
3G will suffer the same fate. 4G or whatever the hell they decide to call it will probably be the convegence of current WiFi and existing 3G technology.
Whatever it will be... it WON'T be today's 3G standards that they took so long to decide on, and currently charge ridiculous prices for service... for what? So that your boss can see you're really NOT at work like you claim to be?

hehehehe
High speed internet access on the go is great to have... but it will never rule out the need for longer battery life (kinda pointless to have WiFi, if you need to plug in right?) and sleek devices. We've reached a point in technology where what we have NOW is "good enough". So much so that other factors come into play... looks, battery life, size and weight, convenience. (Would you use a 3G enabled device that looked like those old 1st gen Motorola analog bricks with the 8 inch antenna and had 15 hour standby time, and 1 hour talk time..if it could hit 11Mbps? I wouldn't)
The problem now, is that all these late comers in the game are all trying to gun for the next big-hit, like GSM hit it big. So now, they're trying to cram all these new "standards" down our throats without even refining the technology concept.
