nice information

shows I'm a bit out of date with it all
I'm sure I am seeing less and less devices using mmc though, most are compact flash or SD and with some of the newer card formats starting to become more widely available too

tats where ur wrong.. Memory Stick hv a max size of 2GB too.. and its out... 1GB for the small Pro Duo version... the reason sony doesnt implement stuff like the MMS or SD is bcoz... they dont need to... all their products doesnt required all that extra stuff like other 3rd parties do.. for a reasons... 1st- sony and sony products works perfectly/compatible/syncronize together, so it does not need any security, programs, additional features... juz plug it in n play..

the benefit of MemoryStick over SD/MMC is none at all (except that MS is much more expensive.)

Why do SE phones support mp3, and not ATRAC then

Well if you count these missing features as a big plus then there is something wrong with you. In case of Memory Stick you are in fact paying more for these missing features!
But of course it is advantage if you are using only Sony products, then you need only MS (and you don't have any other choice). If you are using some other than Sony, I'd say SD is the best slot for Mobile Products if it supports SDIO. Then you can plug in cheap MMC card or add features with SDIO cards.

Practicality wise, I'll go for the MMC as used 'almost' in all Nokia fone products which has memory card slots on it, over the rival one which is being used in SE fone products!

about ATRAC... i do not know why... maybe it will in future phones... but there is one SE product that uses ATRAC.. HBM-30, the bluetooth Mp3 headset.. it uses ATRAC.. hope tat answer ur question...
And there you go.... It is an advantage if ur using Sony products... coz u dont need thoes extra features... like MMC or SD does.. coz Sony products does not need to hv one... and Sony users wud not hv a problem with tat.. coz they know wat they r getting...

MMC is used by other fone brands aside from Nokia, while the the rival is stucked with SE fone models I guess . . . ?

I dunno where I read it but Nokia has signed up in some SD association so the next generation of Nokia will have SD slots in them...
& as to why F828 digicam has included a CF slot is because CF slot is much more popular in Digicams cause Canon & Nikon both use them & consumers where reluctant to switch to Sony because of its M.stick & also CF II type has capacities of 5gb...
