i think i am talking about v800.

you are right in saying the operator doesnt do much, but i think this time voda have worked together with sony ericsson, and have not let

walk all over them!

SE is doing everything to have more money. they care less about there custumors and marketshare.
this is the way Sony has been doing things for a long time on some departments. its sad, very sad, but what can WE (as there biggest fans with so many members) do against it

I didnt try v8 yet, so i can talk generally about operator fw and fone. As i see, the operators should put their own fw in the fones what are made and developed on their own. I saw and tried voda fw on t6x0, the ugly icons and the weird way they confused the user next to the orig se fw was "amazing". As i read here k7 voda fw is almost the same nightmare. Well.. in MY perfect world the phones would all be retail prices with no effing "sponsorship" and the tariffs would be just a little more expensive than landline charges!! Im sick to my stomach of all "phone for a dime with 24 months slave contract"-deals!
Alternatively customers should be allowed to choose:

Thank god i bought my k700i unbranded. Voda is verizon wireless in the US. T-mobile has been good. I had a branded t68i and they unlocked it free. Not only that but i have unlimited gprs. I suppose it depends on the operator. Att and cingular are the nazis here. They refuse to unlock and their phones are nastily branded

at least there is a choice in getting a non-branded phone. i chose the vodafone brand because it really didn't offend me. they have improved the ability to customise the phone - the themes still work - as long as the hideous white/red combination goes away i am happy

but for people who completely hate the branded crud, at least in most countries you are able to obtain the unbranded stuff. i can't say the same for sharp stuff in australia. all the sharp stuff is vodafone branded which is really silly - i'm sure that there'd be some people out there who would want unbranded sharp phones.
