I think a move to 3G is inevitable and if you look at the trend SE is putting in their new phones it really looks that way.

I didn't know that was still a problem...is 3G coverage still patchy despite what the networks say?
@Sirhackalot, you mean K700 owners don't view the S700 as good enough to upgrade to?

Eventually all new handsets will be 3G, but I don't think we will see this for a year or two yet. The networks will need time to convert their customers over from 2.5G and many customers may be reluctant to switch to 3G until the handsets and coverage improve.

I agree, but I don't think we shall see the sort of handsets we want to see until at least mid-way through next year. Coverage is another problem, but one I don't think the networks will realy be able to solve until the end of next year. The services provided to customers also need to be the best available, the networks seme to be intending data services to be their main source of revenue with 3G.

Regarding your discussion on 3G handsets etc. Last weekend (for the first time) I used a 3 handset. One of my friends lent it to me. Anyway, I was shocked at how poor the cooverage was. If 3g is to be a success, the operators definitely need to pull their fingers out. The existing service (in my experience) in London is absolutely beyond reprieve.

The coverage is not too bad considering that 3 have built their network from scratch in less than two years. 3 have improved a great deal since they first launched their 3G service and so have the handsets they offer. I think criticism of 3 can often be a little too harsh considering the fact that they started from nothing, but then again some of the criticism is very much justified.

If Ericsson hadn't merged with Sony then it is highky unlikely that there would be an Ericsson left; they were in a 'wee' spot of financial difficulty.
