After much needless frustration with the big lumpy stand, I discovered that plugging the USB port into a hub - even a powered hub - would not allow the phone to be visible to my PC. When I plugged it into the PC USB socket directly, it worked fine.
I don't understand why. I mean, a mains-powered hub, and the se stand is also plugged into the mains... how much power does the thing want?
After this grief, and the flimsiness of the connectors, I'm going to try to stick with bluetooth syncing ... although I'm sure there's some stupid, petty catch SE have added there to thwart that solution as well.
