Did you register it on MEND?? ;o) You never know, it might be returned to you if you did!
Make sure you "lost" or had your phone "stolen" in accordance with your policy coverage.
They will not cover you on negligence and leaving it unattended for example. Make sure you dont state anything that will nullify your policy.

Orange will not cover it unless you have a crime/loss reference number from the police, and they will only give you one if you report it in person and have the IMEI available.
Don't even bother trying to claim, until you have the ref number and get it ASAP so as not to invalidate your claim. You should, however, bar it straight away.

Yeah, thats only if its stolen, you cant obtain a crime reference number if theres no crime involved. Sometimes claiming for "accidental damage" is the best way forward if you werent actually mugged, attacked or the phone stolen from your person. I once claimed I took a pee and the phone fell down the loo. Accidental damaged and covered straight away.
Losing it doesnt constitute a crime being committed. However I dont know for sure that Orange dont require some sort of ref number for losses.

@frontman
They do require a ref number for loss as well - you can get a "lost in streets" ref from the police for loss. Sometimes, they will accept a police officer's name and badge number, if a ref number cannot be obtained. Accidental damage is fine - providing you've still got the phone!

Yeah ok on the loss number. However you dont have to have the phone still for an accidental damage claim.

sorry mate, but you do. As they will send a courier to collect your old phone and deliver the new one. If the courier returns empty-handed, they charge you a fixed fee (I forget how much) on your bill for the replacement handset.
I've dealt with just about every conceivable insurance claim through them, so I've picked up a bit about how their procedures work!

Bollox, what happens if you "accidentally" drop it in the sea, off a bridge into the river, what if you drop it on a road and a car runs over it - must you collect all the tiny pieces so they can have em back?? Ok, maybe if you spill a cup of water on it and so forth but not ALL accidental damage claims result in the phone being returnable. I too have claimed via Vodafone for accidental damage, never once have I had to return the "broken" phone. On top of that, why should I? Its MY phone, bought outright, I insure it at extra cost, I am legally entitled to keep the phone I purchased even if I claim its been accidentally damaged.
Rubbish.

If you drop it off a bridge or similar, you would have to claim it as lost.
It's not rubbish - I don't waste my time posting rubbish, mate. And I'm not claiming to know the procedures for Voda, just that that's how Orange works.
Have you ever actually made a claim through them? I have made several and this is my experience. I am not arguing that the policy is legitimate, I am simply stating what it is.
Also, your argument about not having to return it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Yes, you bought it, and therefore own it, however it is generally a condition of your insurance policy (and this, I believe, is neither restricted to Orange nor mobile phones) that when a replacement is issued, you have to return the original.
I am aware that plenty of people here post rubbish (both in content and actual truth!) but unless you have evidence to the contrary, about the SPECIFIC subject in question, I would not have thought it is wise to argue with someone who does. And clearly you don't, otherwise you would know that what I am saying is true!

Fair do's Dave, I had a look and Orange do ask for the return of the phone per my example of spilling water etc on it. If some bus runs over it or it falls from a window into a thousand pieces, its not expected to be returned, but of course is preferrable. Not to be a nause, but a friend I worked with at Talkland/Vodafone, who's now at CPW, tells me they ask fot it but sometimes it just aint possible, however those claims are still authorised. So I dunno, I dont care whether they do or dont to be honest as I am a customer of the vastly superior Vodafone, but it seems Orange are stricter on this aspect than Voda. I'll tell em where to shove it if they asked me to return my phone! Pah! To be frank, I was referring to the whole concept and policy when I said "rubbish", not your contribution.
