The magnetic fields produced by the conveyor belt motors in X-ray machines are not strong enough to affect HD's when they pass through. In the past (years and years ago), they were, but this is no longer the case. It is also a cumulative effect. If you were to pass the HD through the X-ray machine a hundred times in one day, there could be a slight problem, but this isn't going to happen, so it will be fine.
The fact that it's outside a laptop makes no difference. Most laptops are made out of plastic, and quite a few of them have no em shielding around the HD.
Hope this helps.

going through the x-ray scanner will not damage it because the magnetic field is low.
keep it on top of a photocopy machine - and make a copy of the disk (for whatever reason!) - and you will have some fireworks..
equivalent to keep raw egg in a microwave along with a some other kitchen spices (i won't tell you which one)... you will think im a terrorist

you don't need any spices to start off with... why don't you try just keeping a raw egg inside the over and watch what happens after a minute
you can spend this weekend, cleaning up your kitchen
here's a video of what happens when you do this.

ps: I am not responsible for any damage whatsoever for any one who tries this! Please make sure you don't add anything else in the microwave either - some home made stuff are quite explosive and can blow your roof off! [ This Message was edited by: maltesh on 2002-06-28 13:48 ]
