Ah yes, I have another q:

What is it with Voda-branded phones not being able to play MP3's? Any reason for this that you know of?

Vodafone Live! (3G version) allows the download of full mp3 tracks which wouldnt be available if they didnt have drm (digital right management). Legally everytime u play the mp3 as a ringtone you should pay a small royalty fee to the music company (as they do in shops/pubs/clubs etc). This is why as standard they dont allow it.

hope this clears that one.

BUT if u have a v800 and grab the drm packager from the se developers site u can re-pack ur own mp3's and play them as ringtones. (that i know works as i tried it today and it worked first time!)

Aha - so nothing to do with only being able to download Voda-prescribed content, thus further increasing their ARPU?

Purely for legal reasons.....

I guess those buggers at Orange and T-Mobile are just law-breaking crims!

well yeh arpu does come into it. but if u take a look at the other providers they wont have full mp3 tracks available as download and use as ringtones. its phone dependent plus if the fone allows it vodafone wont accept the phone which decreases sales for the fone manufacturer.

BUt as mentioned there is always a way round this and with the v800 its bloody easy to get round it. Its free and it works.

no polyphonice ringtones r totally different to mp3's. they r normally drm packaged already (forward locked) to stop people sending them via bluetooth or infared or mms (due to there size they can be sent whereas mp3's are too big)

you will see a lot more things being packed in different ways. one way is time locked where by you get a demo for a week or 7 plays or until a certain date... All part and parcel of companies clamping down on websites offering free ringtones and ppl sending them to each other for less than the cost of the said item.
