@dasilva333,

not sure what cingular offers per se, but i am sure you can find the info online. of course, other cingular users here can shed some light as well.

GPRS plan & SMS...T-Mobile vs. Cingular. Which one is cheaper and gets more bang for your buck.

Not sure if the problem is TMOBILE related or not. Although I have no idea what all the port 80 stuff means. But i upgraded my phone internet to unlimited and Opera is still down. Now maybe it takes awhile to take effect like a day or so, but I have little hope of this.

Anybody else got Opera working yet?

Here's what I believe is the answer. Did a load of research trying to figure out why Opera doesn't work for me at all and eventually figured it out.

I personally have been using free WAP only GPRS.

Basically WAP only GPRS is common and cheaper than full GPRS.

What's the difference? Well, WAP goes over UDP using a protocol called UDP while most other things use TCP/IP.

WAP also usually runs through port 9201, while TCP/IP websites usually run on port 80.

Opera is made for viewing the full internet with the usual TCP/IP. The built in browser is WAP capable and can go over UDP.

What your GPRS provider has probably done is disable port 80 or disable TCP leaving UDP and port 9201 only, which the built in browser uses.

Now, here's where things get interesting.

You can tunnel TCP over UDP:
http://www1.cs.columbia.edu/~lennox/udptunnel/

And you can redirect ports easily too.

So if you could run the above linux UDP tunnel program you could get full internet on your WAP only account. You'd be still going out as WAP
all the way from your GPRS provider to your remote computer so you aren't doing anything outside any WAP account - because you are your own internet provider basically, by converting the internet to WAP protocol.
You do need a remote computer with an open TCP/IP port though. Personally I have a setup with some friends who have a colocated server and shell accounts.

The problem is that the linux UDP tunnel program doesn't seem to be available for symbian! However, if I had a linux motorola phone in front of me I'd give it a go ASAP. If anyone can port the UDP tunnel program from the source code GO FOR IT! It's all there to try.

But here's a final question:

- Why can my built in browser view normal websites? Is it because my GPRS WAP provider is essentially acting as a proxy?

I know! I'll try redirecting port 9201 on my website to an IRC server and try getting IRC on my P800 to connect to www.mywebsite:9201 !

Will report back! what a geek

@dasilva - so it seems it is your fault. The guy snitched on you and probably got a bonus for it. No the rest of us is screwed. Thanks a lot.

TMobile has completely firewalled all HTML browsers outside of their horrible TZONES, or in other words, only the INTERNAL BROWSER will work. I got this directly from the Data Group supervisor himself. There is no real way around it. YOu must upgrade your plan. I was forced to because I have tons of important saved (porn) files on my Opera and need to have access to it. But this is pointless to troubleshoot. Tmobile just reached into your pants and grabbed one nut and said "Give me 20 more a month or I grab the other one too!"

I HATE WIRELESS PROVIDERS!!!

hey guy,

this is a great explanation even though i am sure some of us are still confused with those terms. your linux solution is most impressive. unfortunately not everyone has the luxury to do what you suggested, thus tell T-Mobile or other carriers 'bite me'!!

on the lighter note, if you could get this to work, would it be possible for me, or whoever, to try it out from your server, PLEASE PLEASE, PLEASE. feel free to PM if need be and i will be happy to give it a shot.

now i still have one outstanding question regarding my BT connection to the internet. nothing works still. i am most frustrated.

@dasilva333,

that is interesting indeed. did you change anything? where r u located? i wonder if this is location dependent. because with t-mobile, some users can send SMS via GRPS in seattle and chicago where as people in california can not.

OK, anyone else who replied to this thread and were unable to use Opera, is it working again or this is just for dasilva333.
