just like to point out that there would be nothing stopping exchanging firmware between a and i models apart from the gsm bands that makes small hardware differences. e.g you could put p910i firmware on p910a but i dont believe you would be able to make any calls.
however i have known to be wrong.

Oh, and if you put P910i firmware on a P910a, it will still be able to call, but it will lose the 850 band, it will only be able to use 1800 and 1900

I updated my P910a with p910i firmware before the p910a's update service was up becuz my phone froze on me and wouldn't start up right. It seems to work just fine however I don't know if i've lost the 850 band.

Also, I checked the service menu and it says i'm still working on 850 1800 and 1900. I tried to update with the P910a update service to make sure all was as it should be, but now I get an " error communicating with device" message every time. Anyone know why?

I haven't got a clue why it won't communicate with your device, or why it let you use the P910i update service. Are you sure your phone isn't identifying itself as a P910i now?
