Yes add them and then divide by two to get the avergage speed for the entire journey. This is all you can really do with the info given - ie. no distances or times taken but just the speed either way. Assuming both ways were the same distance! So 36.6665!
bra1ne> you have got a good point though so maybe that could be correct although it doesn't tell you the ditance travelled either way although even though in a mensa question I think this may be a little to complex? But i may well be wrong!

I think the question has some important information that is missing. In this case I would say
both answers are correct....

I thnk bra1ne has a point here. @ed:even f u change d distnce to 44miles dat wud take u 1 hr to travel and at 29.333 mph ur travel tym back is 1.5 hrs. Thats a period of 2.5 hrs at a distance of 88 miles- that wud giv us an ave of 35.2 ryt? Anyway dats how i see it. Ü peace..

>Ba1ne...... ur theory is prob. the best but given the circumstances that we dont know the distance and/or time i would still go with the plus and divide one!!

I would stickt to 36.66 but Brain has a point in his answer!
Another question:
What do you get if you divide 30 by half and then add 10 to it?

Pink Lady got it right, it's definitely 35.2
Formula is 2*44*29.33333/(44+29.33333)
