status update:
i dropped my phone off at TeleTEK, a repair partner of sonyericsson.
they called me 2 hours ago telling me they couldn't do anything because there have been illegal hacking-attempts and the NCK code is set to 0. so they won't repair it.
the friendly folks on the sonyericsson hotline have assured me they'd get in touch with the repair people and see if they can do something.
and best of all ... the error occurred about 3 days past my 12-month warranty

"there have been illegal hacking-attempts and the NCK code is set to 0. so they won't repair it."
So now the question is, is this statement correct? Maybe you didn't tell us the whole truth, since phones don't break like this for no reason.
I never heard of a phone's security system breaking because the SIM was taken out & put back in. What EXACTLY did you (OR SOMEONE ELSE) do with the phone? Did you ever try DIV on it?! a P900 is a very stable machine, so I suspect the USER did something to it.
If you write:
"i never tried unlocking it, i certainly didn't do it 5 times in a row"
" i was just trying to decide if i should go the "legitimate" way and have "official" service center people perform "official" unlocking operations and "officially" keep my guarantee."
"and i'm kind of reluctant to hand them over my $600+ phone, especially if they can't give me a guarantee that they won't break it."
I get the impression that is exactly what you tried to do, they call this in psychology "Verneinung", suggesting yourself what you wouldn't do why no-one asked for it, gives the impression you know more than what you pretend, and often denial reveals a lot of details about the truth!
I guess SE will refuse to repair, they're very sensitive to those who hack around illegally, and quite honestly your story sounds so BS I would agree with SE, they have tech proof something was done to the phone. Sorry m8. Maybe you took the risk of unlocking once your guarantee was over and some idiot broke your P900 by DIV'ing it. There is an easy way back to repair it with DIV, I had the privilige of experimenting with a P900 & DIV, and I could do everything with it, breaking & fixing, just not debranding worked. All depends the order of actions to take in DIV to fix your P900.

what's DIV ?
nope, never tampered with it.
in fact, i never even updated my software because i found it worked the way i wanted it to, and never saw the need to flash the phone with an OS update.
the only reason the simlock would be screwed up is because i'd have someone unlock it. this would make me be able to use it with another operator. i don't have another operator's SIM card, and i don't intend to sell my p900 just yet, since there are no superior alternatives on the market right now. (that's my view, other people might prefer some other smartphone)
i guess i'll have the p900 for another 6-9 months.
unless SE won't fix my phone, in which case i'll need to use a nokia 3210 *puke* since i can't afford to get another p900.
it really is the way i told it. sim out, sim in, NCK=0

Go for the illegal way of getting your phone back.

i'm thinking that too ... if SE can't help me, i guess i'll need to have it unlocked for EUR 20,-
i'm just wondering if that's even possible, since the phone tells me i have 0 unlocking attempts left.
or is there a way around it?

update:
i got my phone back yesterday.
sonyericsson was very helpful. they instructed the service center to unlock my phone, and do it for free even though my guarantee had already expired by a couple of days.
great support, sonyericsson rules !!!
