Looking at it from the perspective of God giving us His best Gift, giving of gifts in this light is emulating a good thing. Again, there is no point celebrating the Man's death & resurrection (Easter) if you do not at least acknowledge His birth. The two are inseparable. @ayush, I believe it was originally a Pagan festival, respecting nature (Something which we now don't seem to do and really should do!) and celebrating the winter solstice, which Christians have since claimed as their own.
