OK @Krubach, I don't fully understand the difference beteen a boot image and a master boot record but, take it back a step, I have a PC with a CD-Rom drive and a DVD-Ram drive (could be RW) only ie NO HDD.
DVDs support boot image so, from what your speculating I should be able to install XP from a CD onto and run on my DVD-Ram drive?

@mince-inside
When you boot up from a XP instalation CD/DVD you're running a "cripled" version of XP OS ie with no or poor graphical UI.
Booting from a CD/DVD makes the OS to load onto memory (because it needs to read/write data).
May i remind you that i never said that you could boot up a XP OS from the USB device, i just said that you could possibly boot an OS in general.
There may be some other problems to put this in practice, but SURELY not the Multi-task issues...

@Jim yes its true you would have to use it on only 1 machine, but if it works, it could open up other ideas
Can anyone confirm?
If you boot into dos would your usb memory stick be seen as a drive or would it only be visible through windows ?
