It's undertstandable that Apple want to protect the area of the market over which they do have something of a monopoly, but if you look at the argument, it does seem that they are being overly anti-competitive.

Also, there is little doubt that this is in the consumer's interest, in terms of cross-compatibility, as Vlammetje says. Although, I can't help but think that since Apple have both the best MP3-player and the best software (in iTunes) on the market, that there isn't a whole lot to complain about, except as a matter of principle!

I don't want to start an argument, but I think there are perfectly good alternatives. The Creative Zen Micro is better than iPod mini, for less, and there are other larger competitors that are better than the larger ipods. Also, personally I think WinAmp is much better than iTunes, even when it's not specifically designed for music, rather all files.

Just my 2 cents.
