You mean there is an unspoken code of conduct between symbian dev? Well in the end it all comes to the moral ethics of the individual. You can virtual get everything on the net if you look in the right places and the dev's site where you can have it legally. It is a question of how you choose to obtain your software. I don't know what planet the person who said i would rather pay more is from but it s like this the programs are small and they want you to pay 20 quid for it? I don't think so if they charged 2 quid for a year the more people would buy and they would end up making more money it's logic really This message was posted from a Nokia

ALL 3rd party apps on my P800 are freeware. While I do not mind paying for an app I eally need if the price is right, I certainly never buy what I can find a free equivalent that fulfills same functions, and in some cases actually do it better. Examples: Sman; OggPlay. This message was posted from a P800

i think freeloaders implies that you are taking advantage of someone or that you are using something that you should be paying for. There is nothing wrong with using a Freeware app just because it is free. If the developer wanted money for it, he would find some way to sell it. Many people have already said that they would pay for an app if they could try it and it was better than the freeware available. I totally agree with everyone who has said that.

Some said that, luckily, most sybian software is available to try before you buy it. That is true, but most software I try is severely crippled until you register it and I can't get a good feel for it. So for now I am sticking with software that I can fully test without buying.

Also, I have not pirated any software for my phone and I don't plan to. If I decide to use any pay software I will pay for it, but I haven't done that yet.

I stand 100% in agreement with knight4led there. Absolutely nothing wrong -morally or legally - using freeware if its available. Its a simple matter of choice. This message was posted from a P800

@plevyadophy nice post!

I also think that most P-series users are quite into their phones, and very often contribute to the testing of new applets - thus forming part of the wider "symbian community" themselves.

Aled, on what basis "should" they be under a fiver?

i`m not talking about the apps which obvoiously took a lot of effort, are useful, well supported and are worthy of buying, i`m talking about crappy little games which would embarrass a zx spectrum, and stupid little things like "turn on the light" which probably took all of one afternoon to code.

I was thinking about your comment and I was wondering how you could benchmark the price of a piece of software for the P9.
A paperback book costs about £7.

go to the library

A CD costs about £8-£9 if you buy online.

the music industry is an even bigger rip off, but thats a different issue and shouldnt be mixed in with this.

I for one would certainly rather pay £14.99 not £4.99 if it meant better support, more frequent maintenance releases/patches/fixes and a shorter development cycle for the next version. After all, that's not even a chart DVD on the high street.

yes fine, but in most cases it doesnt, and even when it does you`ll probably be expected to pay an upgrade fee for the next version anyway

I would pay, BUT I just spent over $1100 AUD on my P910i and I'm not in the mood for paying for software that I could get freely (freeware). Programs that I really wish were free (or at least easier to crack ) was Smartmovie, hahah.

Sman is definately osmthign I would pay for though!
