I am not in a position to speak for other developing countries, but a majority of phones shipped here are brand new. I work in the industry. Its comic really, in the sense that its the Nigerian's sense of ostentation that drives them to make those purchases. I laugh when people flaunt i-Mode phones (having no idea what i-mode is or does) & buy expensive feature-packed phones & only make voice calls with them :)

, most mobiles in the market are the newer models. i mean, if i've read in some magazine or website that a similar new model of phone is out elsewhere, obviously my aspirational factor is towards the "newer", (albeit low end) phone rather than an "obsolete" model.
it is true that there exists this "grey" market in my part of the world where one can obtain a new mobile for a slightly cheaper cost (maybe 3-5% cheaper than buying legally. i guess this is where all the refurbished or old phones end up eventually.
another thing here is that the components that make a mobile phone are really toxic... so they need to be disposed off carefully without causing any damage to the enviornment. so mobile phone companies ship these old phones to the third world, so they can be discarded off here. a lot of electronic "garbage" (like motherboards, monitors, printers) end up here... maybe its an investigation that someone needs to dig into.
conspiracy theory anyone?

I still have a T68i in excellent condition as my backup - backup (i.e. 2nd backup) phone which is just as well because I have to send my moto V3 back next week to be replaced and so will rely on the T68 as my number 1 backup phone for the week!
