Reception would probably be dreadfull sans cable as when i listen to mine i have to aim my cables so i can get a clear signal.

If you plug in a common cheap 3rd party headset youŽll see the radio will work

But...itŽll work ok only if it has cable...if you cut the cable and leva only the conector, the radio will work but the reception will be very bad - because the cable IS really the antena...but any headset will do

I think if you cut the cable from the connector it is like opening the circuit in the connector and your phone will simply see it as an open circuit and will treat it like nothing is plugged in.

It will not work because the phone's way of checking if something is plugged in is not the physical connector but the impedance of the circuit that is plugged in - in this case the impedance of the coil of the earphones (32 ohms, I think).

To make it work after cutting the cable you have to make a dummy circuit that the phone can detect like putting a 32-ohm resistor in place of the earphones. This of course only enables you to turn on the FM radio but doesn't mean that it replaces the antenna functionality of the cable. An antenna is most effective if more of it's surface is exposed to the radio signal and a very tiny resistor obviously has a very small surface area which makes it a very bad antenna. I think all you will hear is "shshshshshshshshshshsh"

For those who don't know "impedence" is a materials opposition to the flow of electrical current, which is measured in ohms....

i have an old /// headset (mono), which works with the radio. i'm just not willing to sabottage the headset to see whether this does work.
