MPEG-4 Format :

Programmes Needed:

DVD Decrypter - http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/1011845169/1
DVDx -
Mepegable X4 Live - http://www.mepegable.com

DVD Decrypter =

Firstly download DVD Decrypter and install. Load up DVD Decrypter and go to Mode and the select IFO. Create a new folder on the desktop and browse and select the folder you wish the VOB / IFO Files to be placed in (The folder you have just created!) then start the conversion (This usually takes around 15 Mins).

Once finished, close DVD Decrypter and load up DVDx.

DVDx =

Once you have loaded up DVDx go to File – Open IFO which should be in your folder you created earlier, (On the desktop) it should then load up the Input Settings. Just press ok and you will get another box “saying DVDx Error” Just ignore this and select yes this should then load up the video screen.

You will then need to choose Settings – Output. From the top drop down box select Video CD (MPEG1) change the Video Bitrate Kbits/s from 1150 to 2300

Next to the Frame Rate click whole this will then select the whole movie and estimate the MB

The resolution must be changed from 352 x 288 to Chemos answer here!

On the volume “do not exceed” choose Infinite.

Keep all other settings the same then press apply

Now press encode. (This could take as long as 2-3 Hours).

Mepegable =

Nice one.

Do you want to go for straight MPEG4 or is AVI a better bet with Smartmovie?

I would recommed http://www.videohelp.com/

go to the left column and find 'convert', select what you want. e.g. I normally do DVD to AVI, and would then use PVAuthor to convert to 3GP.

Ive uploeded a "how to" guide of backing up DVDs to: http://personal.rmcs.cranfiel[....]How%20to%20Rip%20DVD's%201.doc

Have fun

Now I'm a bit more confused. That last tutorial didn't seem to have much to do with AVI files.

I know he used mpeg but you can apply the same procedure with an avi file

SmartMovie will only play avis

For size comparison an avi (divx/xvid/3ivx) will give you a better quality video at 150kb/s than mp4 will at the same bitrate

I'm trying out some ripping and coding now - see how it turns out.

I got the DivX codec etc but still confused with all the choices. Do I tell the codec to resize in the pass settings or just in the resolution ones or just in smartmovie. So many options...

I don't suppose one of you rip-meisters would be kind enough to post ALL their DVDx settings?!

Am I missing here something. Why you guys have to go through all these steps/troubles, just to view DVDs on your P9xx. I use DVD to Mobile software. Just load your favourate dvd in your PC, use this software to convert to *.3gp format and copy that file into your Memory stick. The whole DVD movie into just about 120MB and the quality is outstanding. You can downlaod a trial version from this link http://www.makayama.com/dvd2sony.html

If anybody wants I can send them a small clip of one of the dvd's sample to check it out. You will need some ftp space for about 20MB sample file to view.
I'm very safisfied and have viewed many movies on the phone.

I tried ripping and coding a DVD last night. Used DVDx and the DivX Pro trial codec.

It coded up fine and Smartmovie shank it down nicely and all looked OK on the PC. However, when I transferred it to the P910i it didn't work. I got the usual 3 seconds of jumpyness and then a few seconds of good quality picture but the sound wasn't synced properly. Then the picture froze but the sound carried on. Any ideas what might have gone wrong?

When using the AVI encoding on DVDx you get a special AVI options menu. Should I use the re-size settings in here as well as the Zoom settings in main Output Settings page?
