Just rename it on the PC and drop it in to the corresponding file on the phone.

If the file on the phone is locked, rename it as well then replace it with the one from the backup.

To be honest I have had no problem at all with restoring backups after the f/w update. The last one was perfect. Very strange .......

Sorry, just to confirm, I can take xxxx.dat and if I know it to be for example, a pic, I can rename it xxxxx.jpg and it will just work fine like that?

Ok thanks.

This gets weirder by the minute.

I have just done a master reset. As the phone boots up it displays the message:

Program Messages
Reason Code KERN-EXEC
Reason Number 3

Any clues to that?

As this is after a reset, presumably the firmware update I did has gone wrong?

I shall update again I think.

unfortunately that error is a very generic error and I have yet to see it attributed to any one reason. people get it for all different things they are doing.

perhaps before redoing the firmware try a format rather than a master reset otherwise I guess there is little choice

I am making "some" progress.

I redid the update and without restoring managed to get the messages section working fully.

I then restored the last backup and it stuttered at the same point again. It was file c:\system\mail\index. It said the file was "in use". It wasnt in use by me, thats for sure.

I located this file in the back up, renamed it "index" and tried to transfer it in to the systemmail folder. There was already an "index" file but only 4kb worth, the backed up index is about 35kb.

Upon dragging it into the systemmail folder i get the error message "cannot transfer file Win 32 error (33)"

The Index file that was already there (4kb one) cannot be deleted, renamed or adapted at all. I cant get rid of it.

This seems a bit technical for here I know, but do we have any more ideas based on this information please?

Well Win32 error (33) is another acces error it means the process cannot access the file because another process has locked (is using) the full or a portion of the file, i dont know much at all of which other programme could be using this, and with out seeing a list of running applications and services i dont think i cld guess :/

sorry

well using handday, as sman is still playing up, I closed off everything that I could, so I presume it has to be some sort of system task that cant be closed?

i really dont know what to surgest if u have reset ur phone and only run it at barebones there must be a startup service that uses this possibly all of them! with a name like index id say it was a high possibility, i dont know much about UIQ platforms but is there a way of backing up to a memory stick ???? then u cld remove the memory stick bung it in a card reader delete the file replace it the put it back in the phone.... probably a laffable surgestion tho!

There was something mentioned about starting the backup process to a certain point, removing the phone from the cradle and that then opens all the locked files in preparation for the backup. That would then let you replace files that are normally in use.

If you do a search here and at my-symbian forum I'm sure you will come up with it.

I'm positive it works - go have a look and let us know ....
