My needs in a phone have evolved with time. My basic rule has always been to get a phone with at least the features I had on the previous phone, and specific extras!
-When I bought my first phone - Ericsson GH388, all I wanted was a phone, and it helped if it was small. Then the GH388 was smaller than the popular Nokias and I went for it.
-When I got my T10, I was looking for something affordable, small and snazzy - it suited the bill. And when I upgraded the software to a T18 with voice dialing and all, I was in heaven.
-I became obsessed with phone size for a while and got the T28, classic phone that was. Miss it to this day
-I crossed over to Nokia 7110 because it just was too cool, I am still trying to get over the Naviroller and the whole Matrix feel to answering the phone using the trigger. It also had awsome capacity (sms memory, phonebook), and multiple numbers per person, calendar view, etc
-Size became an issue after a while and I came to my senses and got a T39m, all the features of a 7110 (minus Naviroller), 4 grayscale screen, loads of features!
-Polyphonic ringtones and a colour screen were my next attraction but the T68 was a bit too expensive for me when it came out, so I waited and eventually got the award-winning T610. I got it for the features it had, java and mophun games, excellent screen (then at least), awesome ringtone quality, and amazing themes. It simply was the perfect phone.
-After a year and half with the T610, I needed a better screen, and more customisation capabilities in terms of applications, tones, etc and the next natural evolutionary step was a smartphone... Having earned myself a reputation of sorts as a trendsetter in the gadgets realm among my friends, I also was under pressure to produce something stunning. The K700i just did not quite do it. So, yes, I looked at i-Mate JAM (design to "bland", like every other PDA almost), Nokia 9500 (too big), Motorolla (what was I thinking), P900 (no preloaded office applications editors) and the P910i came out as a winner - the perfect device - camera (OK, not the best around), PDA (everything is in there), MP3 player, Video player, multiple input methods,etc
In summary, I look at what my needs and wants are, and what I can afford. I carry out extensive research on the pros and cons of shorlisted candidates, read reviews, try out the phones and eventually buy the chosen one!

I have to say, my T230 is a great phone. I bought this to use it as a basic phone for calls and sms but was surprised to find almost everything found on higher end models! Consider this: WAP, GPRS, cam if needed, mms, voice recorder, email client, and so on. Cool! Only thing to crib about is the below par screen. But i am satisfied with this one! :-D

I need to be able to stay on top of my mails especially. Not just checking, but receiving and responding promptly. Where I live, regular Internet and power supply is an issue (unspeakable in this age, but true), so having a data-capable device is absolutely essential for me.
I must say there were times that my choices have been influenced more by cost, but those were the exceptions.

The ultimate phone would be a SE K700i with Memory stick duo and 3g...
