Without sounding rude, why would you convert straight from vob files in SmartMovie, would that not mean you would have multiple files for one film?, it sounds awkward.

depends how you decrypteds them

with dvd decrypter it lets you make one big vob file, or split by chapter, the cell id etc etc

you wouldnt convert directly from the dvd disc anwyays, cos they ened to be decrypted, so when yu do that, make it into one big vob file if thats what you require

I have DVD Decrypter... what settings do I need to change to create a single vob file. I didn't realise that could be done.

Also what codec pack could I use for Smartmovie converter to convert direct from vob. I have the Nimo pack and the FFDShow packs but it still says that I don't have the correct codecs.

I tried removing the Nimo and installing the K-Light codec pack as per the Smartmovie site and have even installed that EMpg you mentioned, but so far no luck.

Maybe some of the codecs are conflicting, any views?

I've tried every likely sounding codec I cound find but none of them will allow SM to open the vob files.

I found a filter that will allow direct access to VOB files but you need to rename them as MP2 files first.

I then used SM to code em to the 910. But they were pretty large and the quality wasn't as good as going from a DVDx dvd-to-Divx rip anyway. Film quality was OK mostly but low frame rate and in parts with a lot of whole screen movement artifacts were very evident.

I can't compare the rips posted on this site cos I only have a 56K dialup so can't really d/l those big movie files.

Is there a best file format to encode from (I know it probably depends on the quality of the original file) say that you had an avi, wmv and mpg, which all looked the same quality and were the same resolution. Which one is likely to give the best results?.

The reason I ask is that I had some wmv files which when original looked and sounded great, when encoded they were left with a massive audio shift and quite poor video, but my avi's seemed to be fine, as were the mpg's.

(Settings were 160kb bitrate using xvid in SM Converter)

Also I have yet to encode anything that has left me with results as good as Syntax's.

So @ Syntax
If you read this, is the quality of your encoding mainly due to the quality of your source files?, or down to the settings.

Why do my movies always start really jerky for the first 10 seconds or so then run fine?

I can deal with it for a large movie but for a short clip like a goal from a football game it's poor because the goal is scored before the movie is running as it should

@Guy H. Try setting the Audio Preroll to 0.0 .

@ Mad_Bob. Both. A good source file is paramount. I havent tried .wmv or .asf files, but I am guessing it would create large audio shifts. Your best bet is to convert any video into a standard (uncompressed if you can) .avi before encoding.

Does anyone really get GOOD results with the p series movies?

I can't be arsed to watch a film where people move in obvious steppy frames. Seems to me the phone is almost powerful enough to do it but not quite.
