Slattery put it right there. For all its worth, why shoul a phone that can wash your socks, dry your clothes, prepare breakfast, and detonate an A-bomb not be able to hold a signal well? For crying out loud, above all things, its a phone first. I'm thinking of my P800 here :-) This message was posted from a P800

@govigov: Another good thing about both Sagems & Alcatels are their WAP browsers: fast-loading & a joy to use. Now, I am sure its a French thing. But lets stay on topic here, meaning SE's reception issues. This message was posted from a P800

i cant say ive ever really had a problem. there were some minor issues with my t300 but i think that was more to do with me using it as a football than anything else.

I work as an accountant. It might be useful if we think using an economic point of view :

A. Many people think that Sony Ericsson is the same as Ericsson Telefonaktiebolaget, which is NOT. As you can see from the news, SE has previously struggling to make profit after couple of years' loss.
So they logically has to cut down some expenses, including some licenses paid to Ericsson and Sony. Yes- they are related in term of capital, but economically SE is independent from the parents (Sony and Ericsson). Every time SE want to use facilities from either both, there is some buying-selling transaction (patent using, inventory using, etc) happening between them. And that is cost. It may look ridiculous but to count the profit fairly and independently (in accounting point of view), we must include that as a type of economic transaction. What SE might get as advantage is some kind of "discount price'' from them (known as transfer pricing) - but it still consider as cost.

B. So what's happening? I think SE lately put some concentration - and money or resources in this matter - on Sony. SE is try to use (or to buy, or rent) some facilities from Sony :
- We see many SE phone in many movies, that need some arrangement about how many 'frames' SE is allow to use. As you know, to be included in a movie, brand owner have to pay some amount of money as a sponsor or alike. It is a cost.
- SE using Mem Stick. Yes, there is some political issue related here, but SE owe Sony a patent. It is a cost.
- SE use a Cyber Shot technology in S700, it is a patent execution. It is a cost.
- There might be hundreds of other 'internal transaction' : using Sony's marketing expertise, Sony's product design, Sony's screen technology, etc. Those are costs.

C. SE seems slower in the 'other' side :
- Remember the revolutionary T68 with color screen and MMS? Now even SE lack of EDGE implementation on their handset. SE still avoiding advancement in term of communication technology.
- SE is still concentrating on GSM handset while its parent, Ericsson, capable of both GSM and CDMA. Ericsson is also known as a respectable CDMA network supplier by many operators. SE still avoid this area. To save money or resources perhaps.
- There might be some procedure, some scheme, some 'quality control' steps, etc that SE have to change or skip from Ericsson to save money and resources.

SE is a bit more Sony than Ericsson lately.

@nature: You obviously never spent time in an area with below average network coverage with your T300. That is one of the poorest reception handlers any manufacturer ever produced. No offence :-) This message was posted from a P800

Interesting comments.

I have used T28, P800, T630, Z1010 and P900 in the past all on 2 netowrks (T-Mobile and Vodaphone)

P800/900 struggled on both networks and reception bar is always fluctuating. On nokia, this never happened (i.e. on the 6600, it tends to stay fairly stable). However, it was slightly better then T610/T630. They are both terrible.

The other problems I experienced was that these handsets make a hissing noise in the background, T630 is the worst and on Z1010, the receiver cant even hear me!

P800 got on my nerves too much when I first got it but P900 offers some improvement. All in all, SE has some way to go in improving singal quality in their handsets.

Yes, Sagem is good along with Samsung and Nokia on reception

@dhallug: The T610/630 are really bad, Lord knows. Their saving grace were looks and feature set. It would be suicide to own those two if you live where I used to live. A real signal blackhole on all networks on ground. This message was posted from a P800
