I remember reading somewhere that N standard has a data rate of nearly 200mbps and practically we will get 100mbps

A good way to test your speed is to transfer, say, 1Gb file (like a DVD vob) from one PC to another using wifi. Get the total time and do the following math:
N = total bytes X 8 (total bits transfered)
T = total secs
throughtput = N / T
This will give you the throughput in bps. divide it by 1048576 (1024 x 1024) and you'll get Mbps.
